WORKING WITH RESIN

resin printed legs for space marines

Safety First!

Resin, as great as it is for miniatures, needs to be dealt with appropriately. We at UKWarforged are always careful to use appropriate PPE and safeguards working with liquid resin, and advise our customers to be equally safe when working with resin components.

Safety First.

Persons under the age of 12 should be supervised when working with resin, as the dust can be harmful when inhaled. When drilling, filing or sanding resin we always advise you to work in a well ventilated area, and wear a dust mask.

Working with Resin.

Washing resin printed parts isn't necessary in the same way as with resin cast parts - printed resin parts have no mold release, which is usually what you would need to wash off. That being said, it does no harm to wash your resin parts in warm water, and many customers do so out of habit. In hot water however, you'll find the resin parts gain a little flexibility - perfect to straighten out swords, or other long, thin pieces if needed. Gently bend the resin to the form needed, and submerge in cool water for the resin to set in the correct form.

For resin, plastic glue simply won't work. You need a good cyanoacrylate - or superglue - and roughing up the areas to be glued with a bit of sandpaper/ a file/ or some light scratches with a hobby knife will help the pieces to stick together by increasing the surface area. Some people like to use superglue accelerator to quicken the bonding process, however dampening one side of the join with glue applied to the other, works almost as well. Larger pieces may need pinning in place (remember the resin dust warning above) to strengthen the bond while the glue sets.

This all seems like a lot of work, but the end results with resin parts are well worth the extra steps.
